Today - Blarg

Well, it seems my headaches from last week were contageous. Adam called into work today and went back to sleep. He's been complaining of headaches for the past couple of days. I'm sure it's just a sinus thing, as I'm sure mine was as well. I was hoping to have the house to myself today so I could study, but it's no big deal.

I'm going to start studying for my political science midterm. I honestly have no clue where to start. I've already defined all of the terms at the end of the chapters last weekend, but obviously there's more on the test than just definitions. My prof. handed out a less than adequate study guide, imo, on Tuesday. I'm not sure if I mentioned how much of a waste of paper it was previously. The only thing that is written on it is "1/3 of the test will be counted as an essay, 1/3 will be defining terms, and the last 1/3 will be short answer." Yeah, that's nice, but could you provide something a little more particular to study? I mean, if that's your idea of a study guide, you must not have been teaching very long. While in class on Thursday, everyone asked about the material on the test. So, he said we'll review at the end of the period. During much of the 75 minutes we were in there, he told us how to prepare for a test. Look honey, this ain't freshman orientation. So, we got around to the "review". Flipping through the nine chapters that we need to study for and telling us the subtopics in each chapter isn't a review.

I cannot afford to fail this class, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. He keeps telling us that no one should receive a failing grade whatsoever. Being that I'm off of academic probation the first time since my return, I'd really prefer not to be put back on it.

I'm scared. =\

So, basically you are expecting the prof to give you a detailed outline of what exactly the test covers so you can memorize the exact material that he will test over? Some days -- students surprise me.

As an instructor I expect my students to actually read, formulate ideas on what are the important parts, pay attention to what I said (oh. i test over material I cover verbally but isn't in the book), and finally - understand that they need to study everything - notes, book, etc.

sorry im not showing empathy towards your situation, but you should have to work for your education -- not get it handed to you because you pay.

Before you get on your high horse for whatever reason, I think you misunderstood what I was saying, and probably didn't read any of the previous posts I had said about this particular professor.

No, I don't expect my education to be spoonfed to me, but some sort of guideline would be nice considering a) we've never even had a test in that class b) the midterm is over 9 chapters c) he barely even covered the material in class. He incessantly babbles for 75 minutes about nothing that has to do with the subject matter.

It's like writing a paper about "politics" as a general subject...you can't encapsulate that without some focus beforehand.

I have read the required material for the class as expected. I expect my professor to offer me some sort of education rather than me reading the damn book. I pay for the education, not for him to tell me to read the chapter so I can receive a grade. This is an elective class that I need to count toward my degree. So, basically, what you said about me supposedly not working for my education is null. There are certain expectations that both the instructor and the student should fulfill.

I wasn't expecting empathy toward my situation. And I'm sorry you see me as being a "whiney student who expects my education spoonfed", but that wasn't the reason I was complaining.

If you still feel the way you do after reading this and reading past entries about the subject, that's fine. I'm certainly not going to sit here and cry about it, but I feel that if I'm paying for a quality education to get a degree from a Big 10 school, then I should be educated a little further than from reading a textbook.
